The aim of street lighting is to give sufficient light onto the ground for both pedestrians and drivers.

With roads becoming ever busier, the need for good street lighting is imperative.   WHO

“A main cause of accidents is due to poor street lighting”

  • WHO has warned Local councils against using inefficient lights and dimmers
    • WHO RECOMMENDATION
  • Replacing street lights with LED’s and CFL’s

Envirolight use cutting edge automotive technology to design a patented reflector which is designed around the lamp to give off optimum photometrics. This is a revolutionary development, as other lights just use a very simple reflector, and place more powerful globes to get the required lumens on the ground.

“We know good lighting can reduce night time traffic accidents by up to 30%. It can also reduce street crime by 20%.”

Karen Buck, Transport Minister UK, 8 Dec. 2005 at Institution of Lighting Engineers/Surveyor Magazine Seminar.

Artificial light accounts for 19% of the global demand for electricity - and offers a huge potential for energy savings.

CRI
Definition: The colour rendering index (CRI) is a measure of the ability of a light source to reproduce colours of objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal or natural light source. It is run on a scale 0 -100 (where 100 is equal to light given off by the sun)

REACTION TIME

Dr. I Lewin of the lighting Sciences Inc., Pennsylvania had this to say about orange light.

  • Peripheral vision is extremely unresponsive to orange light (HPS)
  • Orange light (HPS) must be between 3 and 15 times the brightness of white light (CFL), in order to achieve the same effects on drivers’ reaction-times

On an Arrive Alive study, they found that:

“According to research, traffic deaths are 3 times greater at night

WHY

  • 90% of drivers reaction depends on vision
  • Depth perception, colour recognition and peripheral vision are compromised after sunset “

The LRC (Lighting Research Centre, USA) did a residential study on replacing 70watt (84w with ballast) high pressure sodium lamps with 55watt, fluorescent lamps on 8 streetlights in a town Easthampton, Massachusetts.

“Results of the survey of neighbourhood residents show more favourable ratings for the energy efficient CFL than for the high pressure sodium on every question”

Effects of poor CRI

  • Ideal situation for Crime
  • Increase in Drivers Reaction Time
  • Colour Blindness
  • Clarity of CCTV Images Deteriorates
  • Face and Colour Recognition Decline
  • Decrease in Detail and Visibility

Spill Light

What is Light Pollution?

Light Pollution or Spill Light is misdirected or misused light, generally resulting from an inappropriate application of exterior lighting products

Above is a picture taken by NASA of the night sky, and the light pollution caused.

Spill light wastes a huge amount of money for the whole world.

However, light pollution can be remedied by using a full cut-off lighting fixture.

The term full cut-off has and is being used to describe luminaires that have no direct uplight (no light emitted above horizontal).

Envirolight fixtures are full cut-off and the lamp is placed well within the unit allowing light to escape only at an angle of 67.5’
